According to a study conducted after the floods of 2022, at least 10 intersections in the city of Bengalur are vulnerable to waterlogging, which can cause severe traffic jams when the city receives normal to heavy rains. Many of these intersections are flooded again.
These include the distribution of kumaraswamy, IBALURU, goraguntepalya, silk plate, KR PURAM railway station, KadubeeSeanahalli, Sarakki signal, milk circle and Banashanceri signal.
2022 Floods
Studies of the City Institute for Social and Economic Changes in “Environmental Problems and Overload: developing sustainable Bengalur development solutions”, which was in the city after 2022, noted that the “impact of floods is high” at five main intersections: Silk Board, Sarakki, Dairy Circle, Goragunepalya.
For example, on Silk Board Junction, the study remarked, the elimination of solid waste in rainwater drainage resulted in a flood and overload. He recommended rainwater fencing. During September 2022, the flood campus was flooded at various places.
The Sarakki signal was not insufficient. “Water radiates from the manholes during heavy rains. All four lanes have water mining problems. The capacity of drainage needs to be improved to prevent the manhole,” he said.
The KR Puram railway station signal said there were two underpasses near the station intersection. “Both are very narrow and would flood during precipitation, which would lead to overload,” the study said.
226 areas susceptible to floods
He notes that the Center for the Management of Natural Disaster Karnataka and BBMP has identified 226 vulnerable flood areas, said the eastern zone of the city, which has a lake Belllandur and host of many residential areas, often floods during the monsoon. Mahadevapura Zone has 25 areas susceptible to floods. The study said it was necessary to improve the capacity of the detention of lakes to retain water and the flow of excess water into another lake downstream to avoid flooding.
Water logging has become common in areas below Momil and at the end of overpasses/bridges wherever it is inclined down. He recommended the authorities to keep the pumps near the site to release the water.
The BBMP has a total drain network (primary and secondary outflows only) 842 km, while details of tertiary unleashes are missing. A total of 735 km of outflow has been lined. In 2021, the amount of 1060 Crore 1060 Crore was spent.
Professors of ISEC and members of the Faculty of Kala Sridhar, Krishna Raj, with Manasi, Anil Kumar Vaddiraju, Channamma Kambara, R. Manjul and Anjali Karol Mohan (city planner) conducted a study and presented it by Karnataka assessment of the office.
