The State Election Commission is likely to announce the schedule for local body elections in Kerala on Monday. (November 10, 2025).
State Election Commissioner A. Shajahan called a press conference at 12 noon.
Elections are to be held to 1,199 out of 1,200 local bodies in Kerala. After the delimitation exercise in Kerala, the number of wards in 1,200 local bodies increased to 23,612. The 2025 elections are held for 23,576 constituencies, except for the 36 constituencies of Mattannur municipality in Kannur, where elections are not due until 2027.
In the 2020 elections, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) won the upper hand over the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also emerged strongly represented in several local bodies. This time, fierce battles are expected in the local bodies, especially in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, where the LDF rules and the BJP is the main opposition party.
According to the final electoral roll released by the Commission, Kerala has a little over 2.84 million voters. This number is higher by just over 7.8 million voters compared to the voters’ list used for local elections in 2020. The commission also gave another two-day opportunity on November 4 and 5 to enter names on the list. The supplementary list will be published on November 14.
The 2025 local body elections also coincided with the Election Commission of India (ECI) conducting a special intensive review (SIR) of the electoral roll ahead of the 2026 state assembly elections in Kerala. The Kerala government and major political parties including the CPI(M) and the Congress have objected to the ECI’s decision to go ahead with the SIR, citing confusion and inconvenience with regard to local poll arrangements.
In 2020, local polls in Kerala were held under strict surveillance in three phases in December amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
