General Education Minister V Sivankutty on Friday said the state cannot keep its opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 forever.
Responding to questions regarding the discrepancy between the government’s stand expressed against NEP and the clause in PM SHRI’s MoU that states will implement all the provisions of NEP in full, the minister said that the education system is changing all over the world. “Kerala cannot stay away from these changes. Policies have evolved since the state’s inception. We cannot stick to the same policy all the time. But it did not mean that the state changed its stance on NEP as a whole.”
Regarding the opposition to Prime Minister SHRI so far, the minister admitted that the government has some concerns about the NEP. Negotiations were held with the Union Government on this. Recently, the Union Education Minister and the State Education Minister warned that if the state does not take a decision, the Union government will be forced to take drastic action. “As the state did not want to lose funds, PM SHRI signed the contract,” the minister said.
The minister did not give a clear answer as to why the government did not get the confidence of the CPI to sign the MoU.
