The much awaited election for the vacant post of Mayor of Kadapa Municipal Corporation (KMC) is scheduled to be held on December 11 (Thursday).
It may be recalled that former mayor K. Suresh Babu of the YSRCP had filed a case in the High Court challenging his removal on corruption charges as his term will end only in February 2026. Even as the case was pending, he again approached the court on December 5, this time challenging the issuance of a notification to fill the casual vacancy of mayor.
The case came up for hearing on Wednesday, where it was dismissed in a major setback for Mr. Suresh Baba, paving the way for Thursday’s election to take place in the form of an extraordinary council meeting.
Although Mr. Suresh Babu was removed on corruption charges, the YSRCP has the numbers clearly in its favour. The situation has raised hopes among the party’s top corporators, who are expected to enter the contest.
However, YSRCP district president P. Ravindranath Reddy and Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy have already expressed support for Paka Suresh to fill the mayor’s seat.
TDP plays the spectator
With the numbers clearly against them, the TDP decided to contest.
“We only wanted to remove the corrupt mayor and we succeeded. We have no interest in his successor nor do we have the numbers. So we will enjoy the role of a spectator,” TDP politburo member and district president R. Srinivasa Reddy said.
Meanwhile, Director of the Finance Division, John Irwin, issued orders under Section 163 of the BNSS for a radius of 200 meters from the KMC office from Thursday to Saturday (December 13). Similarly, the police department has mobilized enough manpower to the KMC to keep the law and order situation under control.
