The SSUS Syndicate decides on the conditional revocation of the suspension of 12 SFÚ activists

The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS) Syndicate meeting held on Monday (November 2) decided to allow a conditional appeal of the suspension of 12 of the total 16 students who were suspended in connection with the protest led by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) to press their various demands while the Syndicate meeting was going on 2026 on 13 August.

The lifting of their suspension will be conditional upon the submission of an unconditional apology, with the understanding that they will not violate disciplinary standards in the future. The suspension of four students was extended by another two months due to the fact that they actively participated in the organizational affairs of SFÚ during the disciplinary proceedings. Archana PS, president of the university students’ union, was part of it.

The report of the Syndicate’s five-member committee, which investigated the incidents that took place on August 13, was placed before the meeting. It claimed that the protesters staged a mock funeral for Vice Chancellor Ciza Thomas. The syndicate learned that the participation of the suspended students was confirmed on the basis of the CCTV footage examined by the concerned officials.

The management of the SFÚ rejected the accusation, pointing out that the students of the theater department organized a symbolic protest to draw attention to the damaged reflectors they used during their studies.

The university authorities on Monday issued a statement rejecting the claims made by the agitating students that they used damaged lights in the theater department during the protest. The head of the department informed the Syndicate that the lights were damaged in the massive floods of 2018. The university did not receive any complaint of damaged lights from 2018 to March 2026. The affairs of the university were handled by four vice-chancellors and syndicates during this period. Ms Thomas took charge in March 2026, it said.

PS Sanjeev, state secretary of SFÚ, said that the suspended students will not tender an unconditional apology. We will stage an open-ended protest demanding the revocation of their suspension without any conditions, he said.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Janakeeya Samrakshana Samithi Sanskrit University on Monday organized a march to the main campus of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady, demanding that the authorities allow the suspended students affiliated to the SFI to write exams based on the orders of the Kerala High Court. Police stopped the march at the main entrance of the campus. Apart from CPI(M) activists, suspended students and their parents participated.
