The Speaker of the Lok Sabha has appointed advocate Karan Umesh Salvi as a consultant to assist the committee set up under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, to investigate allegations of corruption against Justice Yashwant Varma, currently serving in the Allahabad High Court.
The notification of Mr. Salvi’s appointment was issued on October 17 by the office of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
“Mr. Speaker, the Lok Sabha is pleased to engage Karan Umesh Salvi, Advocate as a consultant to assist the Committee set up under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968 to inquire into the grounds on which the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court is sought. The said appointment will be from 12.5.order, as the case may be earlier,” the notice said.
In August this year, the Speaker initiated the process of removing Justice Varma after receiving a motion signed by 146 members of the Lok Sabha. Mr. Birla noted that integrity and financial and intellectual integrity form the basis of public confidence in the judiciary.
A three-member commission comprising Supreme Court judge Justice Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Karnataka High Court senior advocate BV Acharya was constituted to look into the allegations.
Last month, the chairman appointed advocates Rohan Singh and Sameeksh Du as consultants to assist the same committee.
A bench earlier constituted by the Supreme Court recommended Justice Varma’s removal. Earlier this year, he was repatriated from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court after wads of currency notes were allegedly found burnt at his official residence on March 14.
Justice Varma dismissed all the charges against him.
