The South Zone Women’s Canoeing and Kayaking League begins today in Vizag
Visakhapatnam will host the ASMITA South Zone Women’s Canoeing and Kayaking League at Gambeeramgedda Dam on Saturday and Sunday under the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry’s Khelo India initiative.
Described by the organizers as the first ASMITA Canoe and Kayak League in the South Zone to be held in the country, the championship is organized in collaboration with Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) and Canoe and Kayak Association of Andhra Pradesh (CKAAP). Competitions will be held on both days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, District Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore and Joint Collector G. Vidhyadhari unveiled the championship poster.
Athletes from the southern states will compete in the Junior, Junior, Senior and Women’s Kayak and Canoe Sprint categories over distances of 200 metres, 500 meters and 1000 metres.
According to the organizers, the aim of the championship is to encourage greater participation of women in the sport, identify new talent and promote canoeing and kayaking across the country. The event is also expected to showcase the natural beauty and sporting potential of Gambeeramgedda Dam as a leading destination for water sports.
Organizers invited sports enthusiasts, students, families and the public to attend the championships and cheer on the participating athletes.
