The Assam Police found the partially decomposed and headless body of a woman in Guwahati’s Beltola area on Sunday (September 6, 2026) night.

The severed head was found wrapped in a polythene bag in the refrigerator of the apartment she had lived in since her marriage in September 2025. Her fingers were reportedly cut off.

Police identified the woman as 25-year-old Riya Talukdar, who worked at the boutique. Her taxi driver husband, Ramanujan Goswami, was arrested after he surrendered to the police.

The neighbors complain

The murder came to light after neighbors complained of a foul smell coming from the apartment and informed the police. The police broke the lock, found the woman’s body on the floor and her severed head in the refrigerator.

“The murder followed a fight between the couple. The husband said he often argued with his wife and that she was having an extramarital affair,” said a police officer investigating the case.

“During one such fight on September 3, he lost his temper and killed her,” he said, adding that a machete, the suspected murder weapon, was found in the apartment.

The police registered a case and sent the woman’s body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
