The Kozhikode Sessions Court adjourned till Monday (February 9) its decision on the bail of Shimjith Musthaf, who was accused of aiding and abetting the suicide of 42-year-old businessman U. Deepak, whom she accused of sexually abusing him on a moving bus in Kannur last month.
Justice VS Bindhukumari, after hearing the arguments of the defense counsel, wanted to know if the investigators wanted Shimjith’s further custody, to which the prosecution replied in the affirmative. One of the grounds for the charge was that the police were looking into a complaint filed by a woman who was also in the footage that Shimjitha shot and posted on social media. Earlier, though the Kozhikode Medical College had sought her remand for two days, the trial court at Kunnamangalam, which falls under the station’s jurisdiction, granted only one day’s remand.
Deepak, from Govindapuram, allegedly took his own life on January 18 after a video shot and posted on Instagram by Shimjitha, 35, a post-graduate and former panchayat member of the Indian Union Muslim League, who alleged that he touched her inappropriately in a crowded moving bus at Payyannur in Kannur two days ago. The clip sparked online harassment and is believed to be linked to his death.
It is currently located in the Manjeri undercarriage.
