
The second phase of the Vizhinjam International Seaport development work will be launched by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on January 24. The occasion will also see the opening of Exim Cargo services to enable import and export from the port and the new port road to the National Highway Bypass.
After the completion of the second phase of the project with an investment of ₹ 10,000 crore, the annual capacity of the port will increase from 15 thousand TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) to 50 thousand TEU. There will also be an extension of the anchorage from the existing 800 m to 2,000 m. The existing breakwater will be extended from 3 km to 4 km. In addition, the second phase of the works included a rail yard, a multi-purpose berth, a liquid terminal and a tank yard. Port Minister VN Vasavan will preside over the inaugural function.
