The Kudumbashree-Run Scoafe (School Cafe) project, which gives affordable food and offers support to school students, gains rapid popularity in the Kannur district in Kerala.
After the success of the first SCOAFE at the Kannadipharba High School of Government, the initiative is expanding to all schools in Kannura.
Scaofes, which has been launched by the district mission Kudumbashree and District Panchayat, provide food, refreshments, drinks, books and study materials in the school.
The initiative, which began with 25 schools in 2022-23 using 36.5 GBP Lakh, in 2023-24 expanded to 30 other schools with a allocation of 40 £ Lakh. For the years 2024-25 and 2025-26, 20 lakh and 10 lakh were preserved for further expansion. He is currently hosting 62 SCOAFES, including Aralam High School, as part of the Tribal Special Project.
Scéms, which operate from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, serve lunch meals such as Biryani, Kuzhimanthi and Chapathi and snacks such as tea, coffee and lime juice during breaks. The aim of this initiative is to maintain students on the premises, thus minimizing their exposure to external influences, including the drug mafia.
Each Scofe is managed by two female neighboring groups and provides opportunities for work and business. Their ability to offer hygienic and tasty food at low costs attracted not only students and teachers, but also local residents.
Encouraged by the success of the district and the state mission Kudumbashree is now planning to expand the project across Kerala under the Battalion “Ma Care”.
