A report on the status of nomadic and tribal communities will be submitted to the government within 15 days, said L. Murthy, chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Presiding over a meeting to receive petitions from representatives of nomadic and tribal communities, Mr. Murthy said, “I have gone through 18 districts of the state and the problems faced by the exploited communities in many districts are the same. Housing, land, education and financial facilities should be provided to them,” he said.
Talking about the tribal communities, he said that since the Special Intensive Review (SIR) was going on, the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Forests had been instructed not to evict the members of the tribal community.
“If a situation arises where eviction is necessary, they should be given housing and financial assistance,” he said.
The chairman said that a meeting would be held in all the four revenue divisions at the request of the senior officials to review the situation further.
The Commission found that the problems faced by the members of the SC and ST communities are different even today. “Especially those related to land disputes, service matters and police cases continue to be significant. Based on observations made during district visits, the commission has prepared comprehensive reports highlighting these issues,” Mr. Murthy said.
The report will be submitted to the government along with relevant recommendations for next steps, he said.
He said 7,296 cases related to caste issues are in various stages of investigation and trial in the prosecution department. “The commission has taken serious note of these delays and recommended that regular examinations be conducted to ensure timely disposal of cases,” Mr. Murthy said.
