The roof in the historical synagogue Mala collapsed in recent rain. The middle part of the roof collapsed on Wednesday night, just days after structural vulnerability. The Muziris Heritage project planned steps to solve these questions.
The synagogue, an attractive tourist destination, came into the MUZIRIS HERITAGE PROJECT project in 2017. Members of the Jewish community regularly visit the synagogue and the neighboring cemetery. Years and half years ago it was reconstructed for 75.5 GBP.
Occurred at night
According to local people, the roof was in unstable condition for a while. Since there is a wooden ceiling under the roof, damage cannot be seen from the inside of the synagogue, they said. They complained that, despite writing several letters, the authorities did not take any quick steps, leading to the collapse of the roof. The incident occurred at night and averted the main tragedy.
It is considered one of the oldest synagogues in the state and is the rest of the once emerging Jewish community.
As an emergency measure, the authorities of the Muziris project began to cover the damaged roof on a sail to prevent the rainwater structure from entering.
Recovery efforts
It is expected that officials from the archaeological department will soon visit the website to assess damage and mapping another event. On the basis of these assessments, the renewal efforts will be launched. MLA VR Sunil Kumar, who visited the place, ordered the Muziris authorities to take urgent steps.
