The roof of the first floor of the Bharathi Memorial, the ancestors of the poet Subramaniya Bharathi, on the street Perumal Kovil Kovil in Ettaiyapurama in the Toothuku district, collapsed on Tuesday (March 25).
Since the accident occurred after working hours, no one was injured, although the furniture was damaged. When the collapsed roof fell on the roof of the ground floor, the roof of the lime on the ground floor and reinforcement wood was also damaged.
Based on information from the curator Mahadevi, officials, including Ettaiyapuram Tahsildar Subha, visited the income to assess the damage and find out the cause of the misfortune. Then Tangedco chipped the power supply.
The locals argued that the maintenance of the Bharathi memorial was far from satisfactory and that the incident could be easily turned away if the rainwater stagnated on the roof of the first floor of the house correctly released by rain pipeline at regular intervals.
The revenue officials said the government had allocated funds in the budget of 2025-2026 to renovate 17 memorials across Tamil Nadu, including the Bharathi memorial.
In 1973, the Tamil government bought the home of the ancestors of the poet Subramaniya Bharathi, when M. Karunanidhi was the main minister and transferred it to the memorial. The government appointed a curator at the memorial, where the library now also works part -time. The public can visit the memorial between 9:30 and 18:00 every day.
