The Republican Senator TED Cruz has issued a significant warning against the new tariff regimes of President Donald Trump and warned that this step could lead to recession and destroy fellow Republican prospects in the upcoming elections.
Texas Republican, when he spoke on his judgment of podcasts, said, “I see many Republican cheerleaders reflectively preventing what the White House is doing.”
He expressed concern that an aggressive increase in administration tariffs could cause a trade war in full, “which would destroy jobs at home and real damage to the US economy.”
Fear of recession and political fallout
Cruz warned that economic consequences could have deep political consequences for GOP, especially in 2026.
“If we go to the recession, especially the wrong recession, 2026, most likely politically, would be a blood bath. You are facing a democratic house and you can even face a democratic Senate,” he said.
Concerns about long -term customs policy
The Senator also expressed the restlessness of what he sees as an ideological pressure in Trump’s circle for permanent tariffs.
“I’m afraid, there are voices in administration that want to see how these tariffs continue eternally and forever,” Cruz said.
“One hundred years ago, the US economy did not have a lever effect that would have the impact we are now doing.”
Trump’s tariff plan focuses on business deficits
President Trump announced extensive tariff measures on April 2 and called them part of the new era of the “fair and mutual” trade. Administration says tariffs are aimed at repairing business imbalances and fighting unfair practices such as subsidies, VAT distortion and non -monetary barriers.
Within the new US policy, they said they coincide with the customs rates that other countries deposit on US exports. Trump said it would push foreign government to reduce or remove their tariffs on American goods.
Republican division into business policy deepens
Rep. Don Bacon added to a growing disagreement and announced the plans to show Bill on Monday (April 7) to limit the presidential power unilaterally to impose tariffs. “It will be in the queue we can use, and it’s time for Congress to restore its authorities here,” Bacon said on Sunday CBS News.
He quoted the constitutional reasons for the bill: “The constitution is clear – the House and the Senate, Congress, has the power of tariffs and taxes. We have given some of this power to the powerful branch and I think it was a mistake.”
Bacon’s bill is a partner of the House of the Senate version, which already has support from seven Republican senators. Before storing future tariffs, it would require the White House to look for the approval of the congress.
