Ten-year-old Shreya, who received both kidneys from ten-month-old Aalin, the state’s youngest deceased organ donor, left SAT Hospital on Thursday with a full recovery.
Both of Aalin’s kidneys, measuring just 5cm each, were transplanted to Shreye, who was diagnosed with severe kidney failure following bilateral vesicoureteral reflux when she was admitted in critical condition to SAT Hospital aged eight.
Since then, he has been on maintenance hemodialysis at the Department of Pediatric Nephrology at SAT Hospital.
Pediatric Kidney Transplant Team, led by Haris Chirackal, Head of Urology, Government Medical College Hospital Thiruvananthapuram; Head of Department (HoD) Pediatric Nephrology Susan Uthup; pediatric surgery HoD Sivakumar; and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Ansar, among many others, took 12 hours to complete the operation.
This was the second pediatric kidney transplant performed by the team. Both the surgeries were done completely free of cost as the care was included in the state government’s treatment schemes.
