
Thiruvananthapuram in South Railway has introduced a number of sustainability initiatives to support environmental responsibility and sustainable procedures across the railway network.
According to division offices, they carried out 40 environmental arrest programs and awareness with the participation of 2,315 individuals, which supports a collective obligation to protect the environment.
A total of 35 plantation programs of trees/seedlings were held at various stations, resulting in planting 1,2110 seedlings. In addition, 32 seedlings distribution programs allowed the distribution of 1,131 seedlings to railway employees, passengers and the general public. Efforts to raise public awareness included 17 awareness gatherings, with 945 participants and 17 cartoon competitions, including 1,064 students. The information terrain was also organized through 35 distribution programs for the distribution of brochures/leaflets and addressed 2,750 parties.
Sustainable behavior
As part of the initiatives for waste management and the initiative of cleanliness, the division of 30 activities of the Shramadhan (voluntary cleaning) organized a participation of 2,660 individuals. A total of 27 awareness raising programs were also performed, with 4,418 participants from different groups of participating parties. In addition, 17 organized posters exhibitions were visited by 1,597 individuals, while 17 “without plastic discs” had 1,015 participants, supporting plastics reduction with one use. The division also performed four performances by Nukkad Natak, Song and Street Play with 170 students participants in support of sustainable behavior through cultural programs.
To continue to involve the public, the Selfie Point booth stalls were set up and attracted thousands of passengers. A webinar was also made to restore soil and resistance to dry with 50 participants. In parallel with these environmental efforts, the division commemorated 100 years of electric traction and emphasized the landmark in sustainable energy use for rail operations. Initiatives conducted during 2024-25 reflect the division’s commitment to support the national goals of life campaign and increase public participation and awareness in the field of environmental protection, energy efficiency, afforestation and sustainable transport.
