The Punjab Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a bill proposing stiffer punishment, including life imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹25 lakh, for any act of sacrilege against the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book “regarded as the living Guru”.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann introduced the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026 during a special session of the Assembly.
Introducing the bill, Mr Mann said the bill filled long-standing gaps left by previous governments. “If Sri Guru Granth Sahib is not safe in Punjab, then where else could it be? This law is a historic milestone to check beadbi (blasphemy).” Sri Guru Granth Sahibji is the repository of universal brotherhood, secularism and socialism that guides the destiny of mankind. The message of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is relevant to the entire planet Granth, Oneglobe peace and compassion among mankind,” he said.
