Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday (June 30, 2026) as Iran plans to begin a week-long mourning period for the state funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Hindu had earlier reported that the Iranian president had invited Mr. Modi to travel to Tehran for the funeral. India will be represented by a delegation led by Bihar Governor Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) and Foreign Affairs Minister Pabitra Margherita.

During the phone call, Mr. Modi welcomed the deal reached between the United States and Iran on June 17 that brought a fragile peace to the Persian Gulf region. “President Pezeshkian briefed the Prime Minister on recent developments in West Asia and the way forward. The Prime Minister welcomed the understanding reached and reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy,” a press release issued by the government said.

Ali Khamenei’s funeral is expected to begin on July 3 and continue until July 9, when the events involving Tehran, Qom and Mashhad will end. “The prime minister reiterated the need to continue efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region and to ensure freedom of navigation and trade,” the press said.
