The price of cardamom shows a positive trend during the main period of harvest in September in the State, which is a rarity, because in this period there is usually a decline in prices.
According to the sources of the Spice Council, the ongoing cardamom auction is witnessed by high sales, while farmers receive better prices. They said that during the peak crop period every year, cardamom market usually records prices due to increased tide. This year, however, the market shows a positive trend, with farmers getting around 2,500 GBP to 2,600 GBP per kg.
“Currently, about one lakh kg of cardamom for each auction that is sold out,” the source said.
On Wednesday morning the average price of 2 575 GBP per kg was quoted. In the auction organized by IDUKKI District Traditiom Cardamom Producer Company LTD was the maximum cited price of 3 015 GBP. 78 172 kg were sold from 78,733 kg of cardamom.
Santhosh Joseph, an exporter of cardamom, said that almost all the production, including those in stock last year, was sold out because of the high price. This, combined with lower production in Guatemala, led to its high price during the harvest period at the top. “Sellers receive good export orders that also help in strengthening the market. The current market conditions are expected to continue until Deepavali,” he said.
He added that a heavy import obligation imposed by the United States would not have an impact on the cardamom sector. “The Middle East countries are the main buyers of cardamom, with the United States only importing a small amount of India,” he said.
“I recently visited the main area of cardamom cultivation in Guatemala and found that production was low. It is behind the high prices of cardamom on the global market,” said Tents Pothen, chairman of the Cardamom Planters Federation.
