The traffic police and Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will soon launch an intensified enforcement drive in Kozhikode city to curb the rising number of road accidents based on the new recommendations of the Traffic Regulation Committee. Senior police officers leading the road safety initiative said that complaints about fleeing drivers would be treated as a serious offense and immediate steps would be taken to ensure their arrest.
Road users have repeatedly complained that drivers responsible for accidents flee the scene, fearing public anger and later trying to avoid legal action. Officers made it clear that such practices will no longer be tolerated, noting that late handovers often make investigations difficult, especially in cases where alcohol consumption is suspected.
Drivers who are frequently involved in traffic accidents will also face strict action, including the immediate suspension of their driving license under enhanced checks. Members of the MVD team involved in enforcement said mandatory road safety meetings for violators would be increased from three to five days. This will be in addition to the two weekly lessons organized by the traffic police for fined offenders, they added.
Preparations are also underway to deploy special units for flash checks, targeting riders without helmets and speed limit violators. Traffic personnel posted at major intersections will monitor and record lane violations, signal jumping and suspected underage driving.
According to police sources, the Traffic Regulation Committee and various action committees working for the welfare of accident victims have called for stricter enforcement after reviewing the increase in accidents in the last three months. Recently compiled police data shows that 29 people lost their lives in various accidents during this period. 370 cases of accidents were reported, in which almost 300 persons were seriously injured.
Following a petition filed by a former traffic police officer regarding the growing practice of covering traffic signal boards with private advertisements, the Kerala State Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the Kozhikode city police within 15 days. A case was also registered as the complainant termed it as a violation of road safety rules and demanded strict action from law enforcement agencies and company authorities.
