In a major turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially lifted the temporary suspension of 24-year-old batsman Haider Ali, allowing him to return to competitive cricket and take part in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The decision follows full legal clearance: UK investigators have closed their investigation and dropped rape charges against him.
Haider Ali was first suspended in early August 2025 after he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) following a rape complaint lodged by a Pakistani woman based in the UK. The alleged incident reportedly took place on July 23 at a hotel in Manchester during the Pakistan ‘A’ side’s tour. The PCB suspension was issued as an interim measurepending the conclusion of the British criminal investigation – a step taken in deference to the legal process abroad.
On 4 September 2025, GMP confirmed that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges. As a result, the case was closed and the 24-year-old man was released – his passport was returned and he was released on bail. Following this clearance, the PCB reinstated Haider Ali and along with eight other Pakistani players, issued No Objection Certificates (NOCs) entitling them to play in the upcoming BPL season.
In the upcoming BPL season, Haider Ali will represent Noakhali Express where he will be joined by Pakistan pacer Ihsanullah Khan. The franchise also boasts of a strong international line-up that includes Soumya Sarkar, Kusal Mendis, Johnson Charles and Jaker Ali Anik.
Haider Ali has represented Pakistan in 35 T20 Internationals and two One Day Internationals since his international debut in 2020. His return – starting with the BPL – is likely to be seen as a crucial opportunity both to revive his career and for franchise teams eager to tap into his aggressive batting skills.
That is, while legal acquittal removes the immediate obstacle to his participation, the specter of public scrutiny remains. As Haider takes to the field again, many will be watching to see if this return marks a real comeback or will remain overshadowed by past controversies.
