Paleontological assessment of the fossil assemblage at Panaiyur in Thoothukudi district shows that it belongs to the Middle to Late Holocene period, approximately 8,000 to 12,000 years ago.
The technical report on the assessment conducted by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) was prepared by its scientific team comprising Dola Roy, Debashree Dam, R. Chandran, C. Raghunathana and Dhriti Banerjee.
