The Office for Catastrophe administration in Karnataka wrote to the Ministry of Telecommunications to ensure continuous roads in coastal and Malnad regions, which are susceptible to floods and landslides during the monsoon season.
The Office wrote a letter on Thursday after the deputy Commissioner Chikkamagalur Meen Nagar raised the issue of telecommunications and disruption of the Internet in the Malnad region, which critically influenced the reaction of the disaster, at a meeting held on May 20 to review the readiness for the following southwestern monsoon.
A representative of the Commissioner at the meeting said that telecommunications and internet disturbances were caused by power outages in the Mallad region. Telecommunication services (TSP) providers will not ensure the corresponding fuel for backup generators or sufficient recharge of batteries of the Basic Station (BTS) batteries.
Honnamba S., Commissioner of the Office, wrote GS Sutar, representatives of the CEO of Bengalur on Thursday to instruct all TSPs and Internet service providers (ISP) in the coastal and Mallnad districts to ensure continuous services during the monsoon.
In the letter, the official stated that the standard operational procedure issued by Dot clearly stated that TSP and Internet service providers should provide sufficient advances of fuel, energy and basic equipment to ensure continuous communication during monsoon in areas susceptible to disasters.
Several areas of Chikkamagalur, Kodag, Shivamogg, Hassan, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada receive 4,000 to 5,500 mm rainfall a year. The areas are susceptible to floods and landslides. However, these areas face network problems. During heavy rains, the problem deteriorates, making it difficult for the management to get news of the floods and the lands from the ground and respond to the situation.
