The Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) authorities ordered the newborn’s death investigation after they had fallen from phototherapy in the intensive care of the newborn.
Infant, born in the Smita area from the Guwahati Noonmati 15 area on August 15, underwent treatment of jaundice. The child was found to hang from the railing of phototherapy on Monday (August 18, 2025) around 17:30 and later declared dead.
The death of the newborn and the main Minister of Hiant Bisw Sarma warned against a strong negotiation, if it is found that negligence or abandonment of the duty is the reason “an unfortunate and painful incident”.
“The director of GMCH was surprised to talk to him about the incident. I was told that there were 26 breastfeeders in the unit when the incident occurred, but I do not trust anyone,” he said.
The Chief Minister also said that police commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta was asked to explore the CCTV shots during the investigation.
Achyut Chandra Baishya, director of GMCH, said two investigations had been ordered by the incident. One is from the medical department and the other medical university. “The messages will be presented within 48 hours,” he said.
The hospital authorities stated that the deceased child was born in section C 15 August.
Utpal Bordoloi, the father of an infant, urged the authorities to temporarily deprive those of those on duty during the incident. He demanded a fair investigation and called on the government not to tolerate negligence by healthcare workers.
Mr. Bordoloi also said that he filed a complaint against the police and would take legal action.
This has been the first such incident on GMCH since it was founded in 1960.
