Then US President Joe Biden began to show signs of memory loss in the middle of his first term, according to the original Sin, the upcoming book of journalists Alex Thompson and Jake Tapper. The book, prepared for the issue of May 20, describes in detail how the president has repeatedly forgotten the names of legislators, world leaders and even long -term helpers.
Thompson and Tapper write that while the verbal tripping of Joe Biden was obvious during their campaign by 2020, the decline became more noticeable over time. “The decline has accelerated during its term of office,” the authors note.
“Steve” and “Press”: oval office
One significant episode occurred in December 2022 after Biden announced the release of WNBA Brittney Griner from Russian custody. When Biden tried to convene a meeting in an oval office, Jake Sullivan turned to his national security advisor and called him “Steve”.
According to the book, he also referred to his long -time helper and former director of the White House Communication Kate Bedingfield simply as a “press”. Sullivan has worked with Biden since 2013, while Bedingfield first joined him in 2015.
Democratic allies grew concerned
Biden’s former political director of the 1988 campaign and the secretary of the former commercial trade Bill Daley was among the first to follow Alarms after watching Biden’s flubs on television. At the beginning of 2023, Daley began calling to assess whether the Democrats had a viable alternative candidate, according to the New York Post report.
Later in the same year, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee Jaime Harrison met with the President at the Black Caucus congress event. According to Biden, Biden shook Harrison’s hand “without seeing to know him”.
A foreign leader of confusion
At the beginning of 2024, Biden’s public gaffes became more frequent and glaring. In February, the President confused French President Emmanuel Macron with the late predecessor, and during a press conference he also mixed the leader of Mexico and Egypt.
This particular press briefing came shortly after Robert Hur’s special advisor decided not to prosecute Biden for incorrectly taken classified documents. In his report, Hur noted that the jury could consider Biden a “older man with bad memory”.
“I know what the hell I’m doing”
He responded to Huro’s evaluation and Biden fired back to the White House stage.
“I’m well meant and I’m an older man and I know what the hell I’m doing,” the president said.
According to the original sin, however, many close presidents were less convinced.
The inner circle was silent
Despite the testimony of first -hand memory problems, Biden’s longtime confidants did not question his re -election plans. Among them was Mike Donilon, the head of the advisor who has worked for Biden since 1981.
The book reveals that Biden forgot the name Donilon during the stop of the Iowa campaign in 2019, just a few weeks before the first democratic kauset. “You know, you know,” Biden said, and he couldn’t remember the name of his helper for more than four decades.
Tapper and Thompson write that it was “the only time the assistants feared” about Biden’s cognitive health during the primary health.
Denial continued after the debate melted
After Biden’s non-evaluated debate of June 2024 with Donald Trump-the president, the president on stage stiff-democratic initiates panicked. But Donilon allegedly wiped concerns. “I promise it’s okay,” he assured them.
However, one unnamed head of the White House advisor offered a persistent view of the situation. “We tried to protect him from our own staff, so many people did not realize the scope of the decline in early 2023,” the assistant told the authors.
Book release set up on Reignite debate
The original sin is scheduled for the release of 20 May, only months after the unsuccessful re -election of biden. With first -hand accounts and the inner revelation of the White House, the book is likely to re -attract discussions about age, leadership and transparency at the highest level of government.
