The Indian Navy has successfully foiled a major piracy attempt in the western Indian Ocean after receiving intelligence about suspected pirate activity targeting the merchant ship MV Mashaallah 1, officials said on Wednesday (May 27, 2026).

According to the navy, the pirates were reportedly preparing to surround and target the merchant ship when naval personnel launched a swift operation to intercept and neutralize the threat before any attack could take place.

Officials said the pirates planned to target a commercial vessel operating in the region. The Indian Navy’s warship INS Kolkata immediately moved to the spot and started investigating the suspicious activities in the area.

In an official statement, the Indian Navy said: “In quick response to inputs of piracy activity near the merchant vessel MV Mashallah 1 in the Western Indian Ocean, INS Kolkata took immediate action to investigate and avert the threat. This timely intervention ensured the security of the merchant vessel and prevented a possible piracy attack.”

“As the preferred security partner and first responder in the region, the Indian Navy remains committed to protecting merchant shipping, combating piracy and ensuring safe and secure seas,” the force added.

During the mission, the navy also ensured the safe passage of the merchant ship MV Mashaallah 1 through the sensitive maritime zone.

Officials noted that piracy-related incidents have witnessed an increase in recent years in parts of the western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden, posing serious challenges to merchant shipping and maritime trade routes.

In response to these evolving threats, the Navy has also undertaken several joint exercises and coordinated operations with friendly foreign nations in recent years to strengthen anti-piracy mechanisms and improve interoperability during maritime emergencies.

According to officials, the primary objective of these joint exercises is to improve coordination, preparedness and rapid response capabilities to effectively counter piracy threats and ensure the security of international sea lanes.
