The decision to merge Telangana Board of Intermediate with School Education will be taken after the debate in the Assembly.
The Telangana government has decided to shelve its decision to merge secondary education with school education for the time being. Secondary school admissions will continue as usual for the next academic year (2026-2027), ending the speculation of the past few weeks about the coming merger of secondary education into the general education system.
Hence, the admission process will start immediately without giving space to the students to face any challenges in this direction. The development follows Chief Minister and Education Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s view that there were various technical hurdles in the merger of the two countries which are unlikely to be overcome in the limited time available. Mr. Reddy said a decision on the matter would be taken only after a discussion in the legislature.
To reduce the abandonment rate
This puts on hold the Telangana Education Commission’s recommendation to abolish the secondary education system and replace it with Class XI and XII as per Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) guidelines. The Commission’s recommendation was based on an emphasis on significantly reducing the early school leaving rate. Telangana still practiced the old system of secondary education, as a result of which a large number of students who completed Class X did not enroll in colleges meant for intermediate studies and dropped out, the Commission said.
The Chief Minister had earlier suggested that secondary education could be integrated into school education rather than being kept as a separate entity to overcome the problem. Due to the Education Commission’s preference for the same, suspension of admissions to intermediate courses has been announced in the past, creating apprehension among students and their parents.
However, the Chief Minister reviewed the technical issues and challenges associated with the proposed merger and decided to put the process on hold temporarily. He wanted the officials to decide on extensive consultation with the stakeholders and also to form a committee to formulate the state education policy by studying the issue and giving its recommendations.
