The Youth Organization opposed the ecotourism development project in Meghalaya’s Nongkhylllem Wildlife Sanctuary, which quoted a potential threat to its fine ecosystem.
In a letter submitted to another General General of the Forest (Wilderness) and the Director of Wild Living Wild Protection 6 May, Hynniewtre youth Council (HYC) demanded to cancel the planned ecotouristic project VA around 29 square km in the Meghalay district in the Meghalaya district.
HYC was the second organization that opposed the 23.7 Crore project. The Green-Tech Foundation Foundation (GTF), an environmental group based in Shilllong, asked the State Minister of Tourism Paul Lyngdoha against the proposed infrastructure project.
The project, which was awarded a few weeks ago by the ecological company Meghalaya, includes the construction of tourist apartments, glass Skywalka, water sports arena and other equipment for tourists.
“Sanctuary is a key habitat for different types of animals, birds, reptiles, insects and plants. Any travel activities disrupt the fragile ecology of this protected area,” said Hyc Royupar, President of Hyc Royupar.
He also said that tourism -related projects should not be allowed in protected areas and surroundings.
GTF chairman, HBN Nonglang, told reporters in April that Nongkhyll Wildlife Sanctuaary was too small for infrastructure projects and was well managed with minimal human interaction.
“Instead of a project of infrastructure, the government should direct the funds to develop communities around the shrine to ensure improvement of livelihoods and job opportunities,” he said.
Founded in 1981, the shrine is home to more than 400 species of birds, including the endangered Hornbill with Rufous.
In 2021, a report on the evaluation of the effectiveness of the management of national parks and the sanctuary of wild animals said that Nongkhyll was the best protected area in the northeast.
Village and NGOs protest against and around them and around them in the northeast of infrastructure in protected areas. These include the oil survey project near Hoolock Gibbon The Wild Shrine in East Assam and the logistics park adjacent to the Dorsabeel wetland near Guwahati.
