In one of the most unique and lasting traditions in Mexico, the mayor Daniel Gutierrez of San Pedro Huamelula symbolically married Caiman as part of the pulsating ceremony that connects the native culture with centuries -old legend.
It is assumed that a ritual, which has been practiced for more than 230 years, brings peace, unity and abundance to the region.
What is this ritual?
The symbolic marriage, which took place during the annual patron of the Holy City, which honors San Pedro Apostol, draws on the ancestors of the people Chontal and Huave. Caiman, kindly named Miguelan Estel del Mar Zavalet Ramirez, presents Princess Huave, while the mayor takes over the role of King Choptal.
According to local legend, the royal marriage helped to end the long -term conflict between the two groups and the ritual is carried out every year in memory of this peace.
“For us, it is a ritual in which we ask Mother Earth and our creator for abundance in our harvest, fishing and every product that our region can offer,” said Luis Manuel Lopez, a long -time population.
At this year’s ceremony, Caiman was dressed in a traditional white wedding dress and came through the streets, accompanied by music and dancing inhabitants.
He visited the reptile in the community before it was brought to the wedding ceremony, where she was dressed in three live traditional clothing, including regional zok’s dress decorated with floral patterns and bright colors. The designated “godfather” ensured that the appearance of Caiman corresponded to the grandeur of the event.
The ceremony culminated in the mayor of Gutierrez to give Caiman a ceremonial kiss – a gesture symbolizing love and determination for his people and their traditions.
“Huamelula is so rich in tradition and culture that today, like every year, Huamelula is in the eyes of the world,” Gutierrez said.
The three -day festival serves not only as a celebration of indigenous identity, but as a reminder of permanent links between community, history and nature.
