The mayor met with theater owners

Thiruvananthapuram Mayor VVRajesh on Wednesday held discussions with theater owners to continue his campaign against overcharging of food and beverages in cinemas in malls and multiplexes.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, he said that while the civic body had limitations in intervening in the matter, he said the corporation had submitted a list of suggestions that theater owners should follow. Theater owners were asked to place drinking water dispensers with cups at all exits from the cinema hall. There have been complaints that even children’s food is not allowed in some theatres. The company insisted that such restrictions should not be imposed. Only female employees should check women’s bags. “During the Onam season, the corporation received several complaints about cinema prices. Though we have limitations in checking, the corporation will carry out checks to ensure that none of the norms agreed upon while issuing or renewing theater licenses are violated. Some theaters were found to have removed fire and security systems and placed seats after getting the licences,” said Mr. Raj. Agencies approved only in this area may also have contracts for waste collection. He said that the corporation would call another meeting of theater owners after 15 days. The theater was given time to make the necessary changes in its operation based on the Company’s suggestions.
