î –Phase III of the Marina Blue Flag beach project near Vivekananda House is nearing completion, while work is underway on Phase IV behind the lighthouse and Phase V near Anna Square, according to Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials.

Chennai Corporation has already established and maintains two Blue Flag Beach Zones at Marina Beach under International Standard Beach Development Project. Each phase covers approximately 20 acres and includes 20 bamboo shade structures, 40 reclining chairs, 12 benches to sit on, four watch towers and 24 dustbins.
According to civic officials, the Blue Flag certification plan also includes regular monitoring of bathing water quality, targeted reduction of marine litter by up to 85%, controlled preservation of algal vegetation and a strict code of conduct regarding working conditions and prevention of gender-based rights violations.
Facilities including a meditation centre, reading room, selfie point, playgrounds and separate play equipment for the disabled have been created. The beach areas also include 12 wheelchairs for disabled people, camera surveillance, first aid rooms, storage and separate toilets for men, women, transgender people and people with disabilities.
Automatic drinking water dispensers and nursing rooms for mothers have also been set up at the sites.

GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran recently inspected the portion of Marina Beach that was developed under the Blue Flag certification program in the Teynampet zone and inspected the maintenance work being carried out at the sites.
Officials have been asked to ensure round-the-clock garbage collection during the summer holidays due to the increased number of people on the beach. Instructions have also been issued for the regular maintenance of free public toilets and disabled access routes.
The commissioner also inspected the Chennai Harbor swimming pool managed by the corporation and inspected the water maintenance, hygiene and changing facilities at the premises.
