The Hindu Made of Chennai treasure hunt held on Saturday saw about 40 participants in teams of two set off across the city to solve clues, complete tasks and visit its lesser-explored cultural sites. The event, titled ‘Native Madras Treasure Hunt’, started and ended at the Hindu office on Anna Salai and was designed on the theme of ‘celebrating the birth of Chennai’.
The city-wide trail presented by Sunfeast Supermilk took the participants through various checkpoints in Triplicane, Mylapore, Mount Road and Chintadripet. Teams had to visit and in some cases complete tasks at nine culturally significant sites along the route and collect stickers.
The route included places like Bharathiyar Ninaivu Illam, Cattle shed near Kannagi statue, Poompuhar, The Old Curiosity Shop and Parrot House before returning to the starting point at The Hindu office.
“When we usually do treasure hunts in Chennai, they focus on popular places – like Spencer’s Plaza or Higginbotham’s. This time we wanted to show places that are relatively less explored. For example, the Old Curiosity Shop is probably a place that many have passed by but never visited,” said Vijay Prabhakar, treasure curator.
The winners of the event were Samyuktha R. and Sashank Balaji.
“The clues were very well conceptualized. We had to optimize the route and that was the challenge we faced even before we started the hunt. The hunt took us through some of the most famous parts of the city and kept us on our toes. It wasn’t just a physical activity, we also had to do some puzzles and challenges,” said Ms. Samyuktha.
