
Setting the stage for the introduction of ballot papers in local body elections, the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Act, 2026, was announced on Wednesday after receiving the Governor’s assent on Tuesday.
The Karnataka government has reverted to paper ballots for local body elections in response to concerns about the credibility of EVMs and voter privacy, reflecting a growing consensus on the need to strengthen electoral mechanisms that favor anonymity and transparency, the law said.
