The state government is going to bring several peripheral villages under the newly proposed Bengaluru office (GBA), which will potentially expand the civil area by up to 1000 km. Km. This expansion would mean the main step in urban integration, which would significantly increase jurisdiction over the current 709 km. Km controlled Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
According to official sources, more meetings have been held in recent days about higher bureaucrats and members of the Bengalur Committee to discuss the definition of the GBA borders. These meetings took place days after the Governor Thaawwareand Gehlot presented his consent to the larger law on the administration of Bengalur 2024, legislation aimed at restructuring the metropolitan administration.
As part of restructuring, the state government also considers the division of BBMP into three to five urban corporations aimed at decentralizing the administration and improving the provision of civil services.
Talking to Hindu, a source who took part in the key planning meeting held on Monday, revealed that the proposed GBA area is among the current BBMP and Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) limits, which is currently supervising planning over 1219 km.
Given that Bengalur is experiencing rapid expansion powered by internal migration and extensive investments, many remote villages have effectively become part of the continuous urban growth of the city. The government plans to bring at least 25 of these villages under the administrative Ambit GBA to take advantage of their income potential and provide them with better urban infrastructure.
According to the Act on Administration of Public Bengalur 2024, the GBA will take over the role of the local planning office for the designated area. While the BDA will continue to operate, its role will move to support the evaluation of planning and providing professional inputs in the wider framework of GBA. The final approval of all planning proposals will be in Bengalur Metropolitan Planning Committee (BMPC) – Apex Metropolitan Planning Body.
In order to meet the widespread GBA role, the BMPC jurisdiction will also be extended, which will include a significantly larger area to be formally announced by the state government. This area will include the limits of the newly created GBA and perhaps more regions depending on the future needs of the city development.
The definition of GBA boundaries and new corporations take into account several factors such as population density, existing infrastructure and income potential. It is also planned to carefully definition of the department to ensure a balanced distribution of resources and alleviate fiscal differences between the proposed corporations.
