Kozhikode Corporation Councilors for 2020-25 had an emotional farewell at the Corporation office on Friday (December 12, 2025) with mementos, a group photo and high tea. The council strategically chose a day between election day and the day of the local body election count. The current council will remain in power until a new council takes over, possibly by December 20.
Mayor Beena Philip recalled the council’s achievements over the past five years and expressed her gratitude and respect to all the councilors who made these achievements possible. She appreciated the support and camaraderie between councillors, regardless of political differences. She said there had been no complaints against any of the company’s 75 councillors, a rarity, and expressed hope that the next council would surpass the achievements of the current one.
Later, several councilors from both the ruling front and the opposition spoke. Ruling Front councilors P. Diwakaran and S. Jayasree highlighted what they had learned during their tenure and the work they had been able to do. However, opposition councilors SK Aboobakker and KC Shobhita expressed regret over projects not progressing as expected, including the parking plaza at Kidson Corner, accusing the ruling front of delay and apathy in such matters.
Earlier, the board approved the annual financial statement (2024-25) of the company. It also approved the resignation of two councillors, Alphonsa Mathew and K. Ramlath, who resigned a few weeks ago after they decided to contest the local polls under the banners of other political parties. Ms. Mathew, formerly a Congress member, resigned to join the Aam Aadmi Party, while Ms. Ramlath, an IUML councilor, joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
