The assailants of Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, are still at large two days after the murder, even as other incidents of post-poll violence have been reported from across West Bengal.
The police found the second motorcycle that the killers used to escape. Another bike and a car had already been seized, both with fake registration plates.
Police suspect that local criminals may have tipped off the killers, who shot Rath at close range in North 24 Parganas’ Madhyamgram while he was in a moving car. Rath was shot three times and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
While detectives were taking samples from the crime scene, they found no fingerprints on the car used by the bombers, the sources said. However, police have obtained CCTV footage from the spot.
Sources said that one unit of the Special Investigation Team has gone to Uttar Pradesh to trace the nexus of the killers. ADG CID and DG of BSF inspected the crime scene in Doha’s Madhyamgram locality.
Post-vote violence continues
Crude bomb blasts were reported from Panihati constituency, police said on Thursday (May 7, 2026). At least five Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) workers were injured and are now undergoing treatment.
Panihati constituency was won by Ratna Debnath, mother of victim RG Kar, on a BJP ticket. “There was an explosion here, but it was a little far from my home. Two people were seriously injured and a total of seven were admitted to hospital,” Ms Debnath said.
Blasts were also reported from Howrah’s Sibpur area and pictures went viral on social media.
Both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP said they lost three party workers in the violence. Cases of arson, vandalism and clashes have been reported from various parts of the state since May 4 when the results were announced.
