The two-day Khadi Utsava, an exhibition and sale of handwoven products organized by the Sahyadri Commerce and Management College in Shivanogga, received an enthusiastic response.
Students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the college and neighboring colleges visited the stalls set up by Shyli, Vastra Vinaya, Ambara Chittara – all from Heggod in Sagar taluk – and Khadi Mane from Sagar. The traders, who were both manufacturers and sellers, expressed their happiness at the response they got from the visitors.

In addition to teachers, students also showed interest in handloom products. Apart from buying products at the stalls, they also engaged in conversations with vendors about how raw materials are sourced, challenges faced by weavers, challenges in marketing products and the patterns and colors that are in high demand.
Bhagirathi of Khadinane said, “Many people were curious about the saree with Hase design, a traditional art. I am thankful to the college for organizing the event,” she said.
Kuvempu University Vice-Chancellor Sharath Ananthamurthy was among those who visited the stalls on the first day of the event.
T. Avinash, principal of the college, said the utsava was organized in the backdrop of a recent state government circular encouraging government employees to wear khadi products on the first Saturday of every month. “We have organized the festival in collaboration with the khadi manufacturers so that the employees of the three colleges in the campus take advantage of this opportunity. Besides, our college is a management college. We wanted to provide a platform for local garment manufacturers from whom our students can learn a lot,” he said.
