Indian Railways’ upcoming Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit is nearing completion and is expected to manufacture around 200 intercity trains over the next five years, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday.

Speaking to the media after reviewing the operational plans for the Kazipet facility in New Delhi along with Railway Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu and senior officials, Vaishnaw said the new trains would be deployed across the country for short-distance travel. The proposed intercity trains will be designed for frequent stops and will typically cover distances of about 300 km. They are intended to function as a shuttle service, meeting the commuting needs of students, employees and small business owners while remaining affordable.

Highlighting the features, the minister said the trains will be equipped with modern conveniences such as automatic door closing systems, improved ventilation and improved safety-oriented coach designs. Each train will have a 20-car configuration with two toilets in each car – one at each end.

The trains will also feature advanced tear-free couplings and modern bogies to ensure passenger comfort. They will be designed for speeds of up to 130 km/h and will be equipped with regenerative braking systems that convert braking energy into electricity and supply it back to the grid.

Mr. Vaishnaw noted that the technology will make trains more environmentally friendly, with significantly lower carbon emissions compared to road transport, a press release said.
