Prajwal Revanna, a convicted former MP, has given the Karnataka Prisons and Correctional Services Department a fix, with officials scrambling to identify a “suitable cell” to shift him from Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail on the recommendation of the city police to do so.
The ministry agreed in principle with the police’s recommendation to transfer Prajwal and 11 other inmates after they were caught using mobile phones in the jail. Police recommended they be moved to separate facilities, citing concerns they could influence witnesses or hinder investigations.
The Parappana Agrahara police also took Prajwal into custody for questioning about the source of the phones. Prison officials allegedly involved in the episode have been suspended.
However, the prison department has since been struggling to find suitable facilities to house Prajwal while ensuring adequate security.
Ironically, the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, one of the largest jails in the state and equipped with extensive security infrastructure, has apparently failed to prevent the alleged unauthorized use of phones by inmates. The latest episode also raised questions about prison surveillance and the ability of influential inmates to maintain networks from behind bars.
The department initially considered shifting Prajwal to Hindalga jail in Belagavi, but dropped the plan after jail authorities raised concerns about security measures.
Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Alok Kumar said the proposed move is being reconsidered after consultation with the concerned authorities.
The department is now exploring alternatives to ensure the transfer, if carried out, does not compromise security or ongoing investigations.
