Thousands of people gathered for a running event along a route connecting two lakes in north Bengaluru, organized by Krishna Byre Gowda, Byatarayanapura MLA and Greater Bengaluru Development Minister, to celebrate World Environment Day.

The ‘Bengaluru Lake Run’ was organized by Mr. Gowda’s team to highlight the importance of Bengaluru’s lakes, promote environmental protection, encourage healthy lifestyles and provide a unique running experience along the city’s waterfronts.

The route of the event connected two bodies of water: Jakkur Lake and Rachenahalli Lake. People across age groups participated in the event which was held in two categories, 5k and 10k runs named ‘Majaa’ and ‘Sakkath Majaa’.

Suvarna, a running enthusiast, said such events bring the city together and promote a healthy lifestyle. “Not only that, but it also promotes keeping the city clean. There was a debate on civic sense during the run,” she said.

Preethi Rao, another participant said that the weather was pleasant and the route was just perfect and offered a real Bengaluru experience. Such initiatives should be taken more often, she added.

Along with more than 1,500 runners, Mr. Gowda completed the 10-km run across the lake in 56 minutes. Taking to social media, Mr Gowda said, “From young to old, more than 3000 participants. The winner completed the 10k in 39 minutes. On the other hand, it took me 56 minutes.”
