Marvel Studios has unveiled the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, marking a major shift in its ongoing cinematic storyline with Robert Downey Jr. appearing as Doctor Doom. The footage was screened during a closed presentation at CinemaCon, where it received a standing ovation from attendees.
Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the film opens in theaters on December 18, 2026. The trailer signals a turning point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, placing Doctor Doom at the center of the unfolding Multiverse saga.
The footage reportedly began with a narrative shared between Doom and Thor, setting the tone for a large-scale conflict. Audiences described Doom as visibly scarred and masked, with a voice and accent different from Downey Jr.’s earlier portrayal of Tony Stark.
“Avengers Doomsday thriller tells Doom & Thor. RDJ has an accent and sounds nothing like Tony. Doom wears a mask the whole time and Thor gathers all the heroes. We see Avengers vs X-Men. Thor vs Doom. It ends with Steve joining the fight and reuniting with Thor (sic),” said one attendee.
Scenes shown during the presentation included Thor facing off against Doom, along with glimpses of a bearded Steve Rogers returning with Mjolnir. The trailer also featured several crossover moments, including Professor X identifying multiverse threats and Shang-Chi meeting Gambit.
The footage further hinted at the involvement of the X-Men and the assembly of the Fantastic Four, suggesting a wider integration of characters previously separated from the main Avengers story. The range of visuals and character appearances points to one of Marvel’s most expansive films to date.
Security at the event remained tight and no official footage was released. Attempts to upload or escape the trailer were reportedly prevented. “For anyone hoping the DOOMSDAY trailer would be leaked, security failed hard and took away several people who tried to upload. The security here is second to none (sic),” said another attendee.
The first reactions of those present indicated a great interest in the direction of the project. “Yes, the Avengers Doomsday trailer lives up to the hype. We’ve seen the entire two minute trailer. It’s holding nothing back (sic),” the viewer said, describing the scope and pace of the preview.
The announcement of the film and the debut of the trailer created widespread discussion on the Internet, especially around the return of Downey Jr. to the franchise in a radically different role. Known for portraying Iron Man for over a decade, his casting as Doctor Doom marks a notable shift in the character landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Avengers: Doomsday is expected to play a key role in shaping the next phase of Marvel’s storytelling, with multiple character arcs converging under a single story centered around Doom.
