The residents of Sagar Taluk in the district of Shivamogg on Satuday decided to initiate an indefinite protest against the project Sharathim Pumped Storage.
Dinesh Shiravjala, president of the district district of Shivamogg Raithy Sangha, said on Thursday that local residents, leaders of various political parties and hangers of various Mutti opposed a controversial project that would damage the untouched forest and hotspot. “We are starting an indefinite protest against the project in front of the Sagar Commissioner’s assistant’s office. We are attracted to people and elected representatives to join the protest,” he said.
Environmentalist Akhilesh Chipli said the project would damage the environmentally sensitive forest known for the rare macaque. “The government is still coming up with claims on how the project will benefit Sagar Taluk. Even after repeated protests and strong opposition, Karnataka Power Corporation Limited has not changed its opinion. The project was designed only in favor of suppliers,” he said.
