India’s men’s national basketball team remained stranded in Doha after ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region disrupted international airspace and flight operations, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The team traveled to Qatar to participate in the Asian qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup but was unable to begin its scheduled return journey to India due to extensive airspace restrictions affecting several outbound flights. With several services either delayed or cancelled, the Indian contingent remains temporarily anchored in Doha as authorities assess the evolving situation.
Dr K. Govindaraj, Member of Legislative Council (MLC) and President of FIBA Asia and Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA), said that he is in constant communication with the Embassy of India, Doha and the Qatar Basketball Federation to ensure the safety and well-being of the players and support staff.
According to team officials, the Qatar Basketball Federation has arranged hotel accommodation and provided all necessary logistical support to the Indian contingent during the unforeseen delay. The team’s players and officials are said to be safe and well, with local authorities fully cooperating.
Community organizations have also stepped up to help. Members of the Karnataka Sangha Qatar and the Karnataka Kannada Sangha Qatar offered support to the stranded team, helping coordinate relief efforts and ensuring the players were comfortable while awaiting further travel information.
Officials said the team will return to India once flight operations resume and airspace restrictions are lifted. Meanwhile, Indian authorities and basketball administrators continue to closely monitor the situation and prioritize the security of the contingent.
The unexpected delay disrupted the team’s travel plans, but quick coordination between diplomatic channels, sports authorities and community groups ensured the players remained safe as they waited for clearance to fly home.
