Eluru One Municipal Police, S. Durg Prasad arrested on Sunday for the alleged murder of her grandmother S. Ramanamma (68) on Friday in her residence in Venenevaripet in the city.
Another superintendent of the police (administration) N. Surya Chandra Rao told the media that the accused, unable to repay his debts, focused on Ramanamm, aka Chittil Ramanamma, who lived alone. Durga Prasad strangled her to death and tried to destroy the evidence by burning the body. However, the neighbors who noticed the smoke coming from her house were alerted by the fire brigade and then to the police.
Police arrested the accused in Pampula Cheruvu Gattu on Sunday after reviewing the CCTV shots from the surroundings. They received gold ornaments worth 4 ₹ Lakh and some money from his possession, said Eluru DSP D. Sravan Kumar.
