After the coconut breeders in Pattukkottai noticed that the sap excelled from the base of trees and other symptoms, the horticultural department in Thanjavur and scientists from the coconut research council in the VEPPANCULAT Station survey. This problem was identified as “Thanjavur Wilt” illness, in this area common in the summer.
Then the ministry ordered officers at the block level to view all areas for the affected trees. The research station issued detailed advice. This disease occurs mostly in sandy coastal groves with poor maintenance. Initial symptoms include that the sap has leaked up to 3 feet of the base, coloring and rot of the trunk, yellowing and leaves of leaves, crumbled roots and premature falling nuts. In advanced cases, beetles and mushroom growth may be contaminated.
This disease is caused by ganoderma lucidum, a sponge that spreads soil and water and survives in the soil for a long time. Management includes removal of infected trees, avoiding shared irrigation and using drip systems. Farmers are recommended to apply the Bordeaux mixture around the tree base and administer a quarterly hexaconazole root.
On Friday there was a awareness of the gardening department in the village of Ponnvarayantottai. Demonstrations of disease symptoms and control methods were demonstrated. Officials, scientists and farmers participated, including Deputy Director A. Venkataraman and experts from the Veppankulam station.
The department ordered demonstrations at the level of blocks concerning scientists and farmers to support early detection and treatment of diseases.
