As Karnataka move towards a new ‘Alcohol in Beverage’ (AIB) policy with regard to excise duties, the prices of whisky, gin, rum and other higher-alcohol drinks – consumed mostly by people from the economically weaker sections – are set to rise.
Excise Department’s proposal for implementation of AIB announced by Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the 2026-27 budget proposalsreduces excise duty rates from 16 to 8 and increases the cost of “stronger” alcoholic beverages.
