The health department has issued a general warning to Chikungunya (Chk) in the State after an epidemic, rated as “medium intensity”, on the French territory of Reunion islands on the east coast of Africa as a European Center for Disease and WHO, which carefully monitors the evolving situation.
The first outbreak of Chikungunya in Kerala was in 2006-07, and this was an extension of the focus that began on the islands of Reunion and which spread rapidly over Asian countries.
The current focus began at the end of August 2024 across various villages on the islands of Reunion and continues in 2025, which also led to an increase in the hospital reception. According to ECDC reports, two deaths related to Chikungunya had to be hospitalized, while up to 14 newborns had to be hospitalized. More than 13,000 cases have been reported so far.
From mosquitoes
This is the background that Kerala issues warnings, said the Health Department. The Chikungunya virus is transmitted by Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, whose concentration has been high in Kerala in recent years.
Chikungunya is sporadically reported in Kerala and 29 cases were two deaths last year, as stated by the integrated monitoring project.
