The Telangana government plans to introduce organic farming from the coming kharif season by encouraging farmers to adopt natural farming methods on 61,125 acres under the National Organic Farming Mission.
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Tuesday (March 17) interacted virtually with the farmers selected for starting organic farming and learned about their experience with organic methods, if any, and their problems. He said that natural farming is being promoted in the mission mode as the demand for naturally grown crops is increasing globally.
The minister explained that it will be implemented in 489 clusters at a cost of ₹42 crore and the farmers selected for the mission will first be trained in some identified Rythu Vedikas. In each cluster, two persons with knowledge of organic farming and marketing would be appointed to assist the farmers and receive a monthly honorarium of ₹5,000.
To lay down the three basic requirements for starting organic farming – “beejamrutham, jeevamrutham and dashaparni” (bio-inputs – pesticides and fertilisers) – the government would set up bio-input resource centers (BRCs) at a cost of ₹ 1 lakh each to help farmers who are unable to produce them themselves.
The minister said that 61,125 farmers selected for the mission were given farm kits at Rythu Vedikas on Tuesday.
