With a stated aim to “shape the career path of students at the school level and make them creative entrepreneurs in the future”, the state government has decided to provide Karnataka Public School (KPS) high-tech STEAM-based education – starting from high school.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. In STEAM-based education, learning is more interesting and effective, primarily through experiments, robotics, coding, electronics, model making, and problem-solving skills.
In the prevailing traditional model of education, students read and understand the content of textbooks and write exams. In the STEAM education system, emphasis is placed on the development of skills to solve real problems.
“STEAM will encourage students to become creative and work together in a team. In this model of education, students have the opportunity to engage in project-based learning. Incorporating ‘Art’ into STEAM will enhance students’ imagination, help them with design thinking and enable them to find creative and innovative solutions,” said a Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) official.
Technical knowledge alone will not be enough in the future labor market. Instead, new ideas, design skills, teamwork and communication skills will be needed. STEAM education comprehensively covers all these aspects and will provide them with essential skills to succeed in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), cyber security, data science and space technology, the official added.
As a pilot, robotics, coding, artificial intelligence and hands-on learning are already being emphasized at KPS in Kalasa, Chikkamagaluru district, with the help of Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL). From now on, all KPS will focus on STEAM-based educational modules, officials said.
Vikas Kishor Suralkar, Commissioner of School Education, said that measures are being taken to make suitable changes in the curriculum to implement STEAM-based education in KPS. “This will help students develop the skills needed for the future job market,” he noted.
